Saturday 13th Feb 2010 - Rusthall Reserves.

It is a cliché in football that the better teams can play poorly and still win. Another is that sometimes you need to win ugly.  Based on this performance then, we are heading for the league title!  Coming up against a poor Rusthall side, and with a strong squad, this was a match that we should have won at a canter.  Things started relatively well, and it took little time for us to open the scoring.  Adrian Anderson, starting for the first time this season after a broken leg, finished off a quick break out of defence involving Brian Allen and Luke Jenner by rounding the keeper and slotting home.  10 minutes later and he was at it again, this time a long ball out from the back found him in acres of space having beaten the attempted off-side trap, and again he had little trouble in calmly slotting past the diving custodian.  Those in the ground were anticipating a rash of Coney goals, but this was about as good as it got.  Our passing was off, defensively we were suffering from a number of lapses in concentration and Rusthall were dominating possession with very little threat.  We created the odd chance, the best being when Luke and Adrian combined to set up Pete Nolan but he fired over from the edge of the box. HT: 2-0

The second half saw us continue on the same path, rarely getting out of first gear.  We improved when not on the ball, a little more pressure disrupting the Rusthall attacking threat, but again giving away possession to easily and reverting to easily hoofing it out meaning we failed to sustain any sort of pressure.  Although defensively we looked disciplined and organised, as the half progressed Tom Derry in goal was forced to make a couple of good saves and it was a testament to his concentration levels having had little to do for the first 70 minutes.  Having had little of the ball or been on the attack this half, we broke out of defence and a 70 yard run from inside his own half saw Josh Hamit leave the Rusthall defence for dead and he squared for substitute Tom Perkins to slot home with his first and second touches of the game.  F-T: 3-0

A welcome three points and another clean sheet.  Not our greatest performance however, and against Westerham away we will need to show a much greater ability to hold on to the ball.
