Saturday 23th January Greenways Reserves

Our first match for 6 weeks as a result of the weather and for sheer entertainment value we carried on where we left off. However the final score was disappointing. We started off well. The first half saw us looking tight at the back despite an unfamiliar 'keeper in goal and effectively limiting the Greenways attack to long range pot shots. Having settled we looked good going forward with Josh Hamit in particular causing early problems down the right hand side. We went close when Ricky Francis headed just wide, and with Brian Allen dictating play behind him it was a matter of time before we scored. The goal duly came when Brian was brought down in the box having skipped past a couple of challenges and Dan Hinton stepped up to convert. We continued to press, and an excellent move down the left involving Billy Perry, Harrison Derry and Brian saw Ricky through on goal and, having glided past the 'keeper he somehow put the ball wide of the far post.

HT: 1-0.

The second half would have ideally seen us go on to see the game out with little drama about it. Unfortunately, as has often been the case this year we went out seemingly with the view that we had won and found ourselves 4-1 down within 15 minutes. The first came because we didn’t close down a weak corner, the next two because we didn’t track back on the right hand side, and the fourth through a combination of not shutting down on the edge of the box and poor goalkeeping. We must learn from these mistakes. One area that has improved over the course of the season has been the never say die attitude within the team, and the fight back began when Harrison Derry latched on to a headed clearance and fired home from the edge of the box. Brian then picked up a loose ball fully 30 yards out and hit a piledriver giving the ’keeper no chance. With our tails up we continued to push and Nick Taylor was unlucky to fire wide having turned past his man in the box. Pushing everyone forward bar Phillipe in goal, we equalised with almost the last kick of the match. Dan Hinton fired in from wide on the right, the ’keeper got a hand on it but only into the direction of Nick who got his first goal of the season from half a yard from goal. Although the fight back was good, this was a match we should have won. Away to Fleetdown next week will be a lot tougher, and we won't be able to afford the 15 minute kip we got away with here.
