One of the most entertaining 0-0 draws I have witnessed for a long time. With the various upheavals in the week and 7 reserve team regulars stepping up to the firsts, just getting a competitive XI out was an achievement in this match. In the event, against a strong, organised and disciplined Westerham XI currently third in the table, we put in a performance that was more than worthy of the draw we gained - and a massive improvement on the 4-1 loss in our second game of the season. Going up the hill in the first half proved no obstacle as we created a number of chances, the new look strike force of Jermaine Adan, Dan Canning and Luke Jenner combining well on a number of occasions, with Luke and Dan both unlucky when hitting the woodwork. It would be unfair to suggest that it was an easy ride, with the Westerham attack looking particularly dangerous at set-pieces and having a goal disallowed for a push, but we battled well and as the defence got used to each other, having never played together before, we started to look more disciplined and organised. With Nash Majome unrecognisable from the lacklustre player of the week before - his constant harrying and intelligent passing proving the catalyst for much of our attacking play - and Jay Mann and debutant Paul Atkinson probing in the middle we constantly looked dangerous, and again went close when Jermaine fired inches wide having turned his man inside out wide on the left. Half-time: 0-0 We entered the half with hopes high, the slope now in our favour, and we started well and exerted a lot of pressure for the first 15 minutes or so. With Jay excelling in the centre of the park, he was unlucky when his effort from the edge of the box went narrowly wide of the far post. As the half progressed, our fitness (or lack of it in a number of cases) began to tell and Westerham started to probe more and Tom Derry was forced to make a couple of excellent saves. This did not mean we were neutralised as an attacking threat however, with a Dean Rose header going inches wide with the keeper routed to the spot, and a superb turn from Jermaine taking out his marker only for the ball to get caught under his feet on the boggy pitch preventing a clean strike on goal. As the end approached, Nash once again proved his worth with his harassing of the opposition central midfield constantly holding up their attack, and his combinations with the impressive Tom Perkins and Dan on the left proving equally problematic for the Westerham defence. However, the winning goal would not come for either side and in the end a draw was probably the fairest result although both sides will probably have felt they could have won it. A pleasing performance from something of a scratch team, our third clean sheet in a row and now five matches unbeaten. Bring on Chipstead next week! FT: 0-0 Team: Tom Derry (c), Dan Hinton, Tom Perkins, Nash Majome, Ashley Mclean-Elliott, Adrian Anderson, Paul Atkinson (Dean Rose), Jay Mann, Dan Canning, Luke Jenner, Jermaine Adan. Sub not used: Greg Mafutala Man of the Match: A number of people excelled in this match - Jay Mann, Tom Perkins and Dan Canning noticeably raising their game from previous levels - but it has to go to Nash for running about 5 times as far as anyone else on the pitch, his constant harrying breaking down the opposition time after time and his improved passing this week proving the catalyst for a number of attacks.
