Saturday 27th Feb vs Milton and Fulston

This was a win that got away.  Against bottom of the table Milton and Fulston hopes were high that we could kick on and start to climb the table. We started well enough, dominating the early play, and it was no surprise when Peter Allen headed home from close range following some neat interplay between brother Brian and Billy Jackson on the left hand side.  Looking solid at the back, with debutant Billy Chatterway looking dangerous going forward from left-back, we continued to press and a couple of crosses drilled across the face of goal simply needed a finishing touch that never came.  An attempted volley on goal that cleared the fence behind it from Dean Davenport aside, we looked like the only team going to score, so it was something of a disappointment when midway through we conceded the penalty that let Milton back into it.  I missed the actual incident although I am told it was debatable. In any case, our heads did not drop and we deservedly regained the lead when Billy Chatterway's free-kick from the left caused confusion in the Milton back-line and their number 4 obliged with a diving header from 14 yards out leaving his own keeper no chance.  It was a clinical finish that would have been difficult for one of our forwards to better!

HT: 2-1

The second half kicked off and although we continued to work hard, we seemed to lack the quality that would have enabled us to push on. Although Milton rarely crated a clear cut chance, and we generally looked fairly solid at the back with Dan Ward quick to smother any balls that got past the back four, at times we appeared content to sit back and invite Milton on to us.  Our one clear cut opportunity saw Billy Jackson through one on one and his attempted chip forced a good save from the keeper, although Billy was berating himself for not just whacking it in the bar afterwards.  As the half progressed, Milton
continued to look for the equaliser and it came with a minute to go on the clock. An innocuous looking ball from the right hand side deflected off Jason Lincoln in front of goal, and with our reaction being slower than needed it dropped to a forward 6 yards out in a position it would have been easier to miss from.

FT: 2-2

In the dressing room afterwards this rightly felt like a defeat.  This was a match that should have been won   and we will need to close these games out if we are to get out of the position we find ourselves in in the league.
